Working the Kansas State Fair Booth

My first scheduled time for working the booth was the first Sunday of the fair. I was expecting people of the party to stop by which they did.

I was expecting to be jeered with unrepeatable words from the other party and those who were so fed up with politics that I would be told to do things with my body parts. To my surprise this DID NOT happen.

Some came to the booth asking who the presidential candidates would be. I told them I could answer that question but not today. As soon as the Parties hold their national conventions I would get back with them as soon as possible.

People came to the booth to ask questions. The primary issue was on voting. Those who wanted to know what to do to register because they recently moved to Kansas, wanting to know how to register for the first time and how early voting worked.

A young lady from Buhler came to ask how she would go about becoming an intern. Others came to sign up to volunteer.

The greatest of all questions came from a young gentleman who wanted to know about getting an absentee ballot. Along with him was his wife and two children, one in a stroller. He is headed to Iraq next month and he doesn't want to give up his right to vote. He will be based sixty miles from the Iran border. I gave him the information and touched base with our political Guru who was also working the booth as I certainly did not want to give one of our troops wrong information. Also working the booth was a gentleman who happened to be wearing his VFW hat. As soon as he heard what I had said he jumped up out of his chair, put both hands around the gentleman's one hand and said THANK YOU, GOD BLESS YOU SON. The American Legion booth was across from ours and we acknowledge this gentleman to them. Again, he was complimented for his actions. He left the building with his wife and young children. That's what America is all about.

Even though the words on our booth read State Democrats it was much more than that. On that day we were the information booth for Kansas.

After we closed down the booth for the evening I found myself walking back to my car humming the tune of "and I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free" and before long I was singing loudly "and I'm proud for the Americans who gave their life for me..."

God bless the USA
